CERF Provides Disaster Relief and Educational Resources for Craft Artists
Published: July 17, 2008 Would your craft-based business be able to survive a disaster like a tornado, a studio fire, or the recent Midwest floods? While it's not uplifting to think about what can go wrong, it is uplifting to know that there's an organization that troubled business owners can turn to. Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) provides emergency financial assistance to qualifying craft artists throughout the United States who need help getting back on their feet after a disaster.
According to CERF's Web site, the organization was founded in 1985 as a formalized venue for the "inherent generosity" of the craft community. Financial assistance from CERF may be in the form of a grant or no-interest loan, or they may advocate on behalf of an artist to have booth fees waived at participating craft shows or to secure discounts or donations of craft supplies and equipment.
In order to prevent overwhelming loss in the event of a disaster, CERF also focuses on emergency readiness by providing information on multiple types of insurance and on preparedness resources. They also help to decrease the likelihood of an occupational disaster or injury by educating artists on work-related health and safety.
While CERF primarily focuses on getting craftspeople out of tight spots, they're also a great starting point if you're looking for information on professional development. Their Web site has many links to resources on art-specific professional issues, business education and workshops, and legal and financial management.
If you're not in need of any of these services, but you want to contribute to a great organization, you can visit CERF's Web site to contribute funds through donation or planned giving. Or, you can visit their online store, where you can purchase charms, T-shirts, tote bags, and note cards. To learn more, visit CERF's Web site, http://craftemergency.org. --Kristin Sutter
