How to: Marking and Cutting Solder

Published: November 5, 2007
Wire Solder
To prevent confusing your wire solder with regular silver wire, use this standard practice: Bend easy solder once. Bend medium solder twice, and bend hard solder three times.

-Place your finger over the well of the wire cutters while you're clipping pallions to keep them from flying off.
Sheet Solder
When using sheet solder, use a scribe to scratch the letter of the solder's grade completely over both sides of the sheet. Or you can color one side of the sheet with differently colored permanent markers - the marked will burn off as you solder.

-To cut the solder, fray one side of the sheet with solder scissors, and then place your finger over the ends and cut across the fray to create tiny pallions of solder.
